Belize Closes Border With Mexico, Causing Chaos at Free Zone

Long line of vehicles stuck in traffic at the Belize-Mexico border crossing near the Free Zone.

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Miles-long lines of vehicles formed Sunday afternoon at the Belize Free Zone after the country temporarily closed its border with Mexico for reasons that remain unclear.

According to reports from the area, most vehicles had been stuck for more than two hours without moving.

The situation has caused stress and frustration among drivers, both Mexican and Belizean, who are waiting for traffic to resume normally.

Those affected include families and tourists who visited the Free Zone on Sunday, one of the busiest days at the commercial hub.

As of 8 p.m., neither Belizean nor Mexican authorities had provided an official explanation for the closure or an estimated time for when traffic would return to normal.
