Mexico City — The cost of the basic food basket in Mexico continues to rise, with 44 essential products seeing price increases of more than 15 pesos between April and May, according to the National Alliance of Small Merchants (ANPEC).
ANPEC President Cuauhtémoc Rivera said the average cost of a basic grocery basket now stands at 2,121.50 pesos, based on a survey conducted across all 32 states at 200 points of sale covering high, medium, and popular consumption levels.
Quintana Roo ranked among the top 10 states with the most expensive basic baskets, Rivera noted.
Price variations over the past two months depend on the region, with increases ranging from 5 to 15 pesos per item, hitting household budgets hard, he added.
Among the products with the biggest price jumps, poblano chili rose 15.47%, from 71.38 to 82.42 pesos, while potatoes increased 13.22% to 43.13 pesos. Other everyday items also saw inflationary pressure: table salt rose 6.42% to 24.88 pesos, pasta for soup went up 4.15% to 12.56 pesos, and toilet paper increased 3.14% to 33.88 pesos.
