Tulum Mayor Safe, No Assassination Attempt

TULUM — The Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPyPC) has denied that an attempt was made today on the life of Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo. The agency clarified that the detention of three individuals, who were found with a short firearm, occurred in a location separate from where the mayor was conducting a tour this morning.

According to an official statement, the detention, which was shared on social media, occurred when the three subjects noticed a police presence on a public street and exhibited suspicious behavior. This prompted officers to conduct a preventive search.

During this action, police secured a short firearm from the individuals. The three subjects were subsequently turned over to the appropriate authorities to determine their legal responsibilities.

The agency emphasized that this detention was an isolated incident and assured the public that the circulation of information regarding a supposed attack on the municipal president is entirely false.

“It is important to clarify that this detention debunks the circulation of false information that referred to a supposed attempted aggression against the Municipal President. This claim is totally false, as the registered event was isolated and occurred in a different place,” the bulletin stated.

Later, the mayor himself posted a message on his social media accounts to confirm that his activities were proceeding normally.

“I walked along Tulum Avenue accompanied by councilwomen, councilmen, and the secretary of the SSPyPC. We spoke with merchants, neighbors, and residents who live the day-to-day life of our city. Listening to them and holding a dialogue is the best way to find real solutions. Tulum deserves a government that is close to the people and delivers results, and that is what we are working on,” he posted.

In its communiqué, the Secretary of Public Security further reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and security in the municipality, while also urging citizens not to spread rumors or false information that generates alarm among the population.
