Cancún Authorities Identify 19-Year-Old Woman Found Dead Near Supermanzana 201

Investigators work near a dirt road bordered by vegetation in Colonia Cuna Maya, Cancún, where the body of a 19-year-old woman was found

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities have identified a woman found dead on a dirt road in Cancún as a 19-year-old local resident, a week after her body was discovered near the entrance to Colonia Cuna Maya.

The victim was identified as Marisol, originally from Cancún, following forensic identification procedures. Investigators say she was allegedly involved in local drug sales, though officials have not released further details about that line of inquiry.

State Prosecutor’s Office personnel are searching for those responsible for killing the teenager, who was found with blows to the head from stones in the early morning hours of last Wednesday.

Motorcycle taxi drivers passing along the dirt road spotted the body and reported it to authorities. The scene was located about 200 meters from Avenida Niños Héroes, near the water pumping station for the Haciendas Real del Caribe subdivision, at the end of Chunchucmil street, where a dirt road flanked by vegetation on both sides connects to Avenida 20 de Noviembre.

The discovery was made around 7 a.m. beside the unpaved road near Supermanzana 201, one of the entrances to Colonia Cuna Maya.

After the crime was reported, Municipal Police officers detained a homeless man who had been using an abandoned lot near the site as shelter, in order to determine whether he was connected to the killing. Investigators ruled out his involvement, and he was released the following day.

Preliminary inquiries discounted the theory that the woman was attacked at random while walking along the road. Instead, investigators believe she was taken to the area to be killed because of her possible ties to drug dealing.

Among the lines of investigation is a version suggesting her killing could be linked to a recent attack in the Corales subdivision, where assailants were looking for people connected to their criminal activities but instead killed a young man and a mother by mistake.
