Armed Robbers Set Mototaxi Ablaze After Assault in Cancun

A mototaxi completely burned out on a dirt road in Cancun after being set on fire by robbers

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A mototaxi driver was assaulted and his vehicle set on fire early Monday morning in Cancun, prompting a response from multiple security agencies.

Police officers, along with personnel from the State Prosecutor’s Office and the Mexican Navy, cordoned off the area and began an investigation after the burning vehicle was reported on a dirt road near Avenida Galaxias del Sol.

The driver told authorities that two men hired him in the Region 215 neighborhood. During the ride, they directed him onto a dirt road near the La Joya housing complex, where they pulled out a firearm and demanded his belongings. The assailants struck him in the head with the gun butt before dousing the mototaxi — numbered 613 — with fuel and setting it on fire. They then fled in an unknown direction.

Despite his injuries, the driver managed to call for help. Paramedics treated him at the scene, and he did not require immediate hospitalization.

A search operation was launched to find the suspects, but no arrests have been reported as of this writing. The incident has raised concerns among local transport drivers about increasing risks during their shifts.
