Ticul, Yucatán — A new earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was felt in the municipality of Ticul, located in the state of Yucatán, on Monday afternoon, September 15.
The ground movement was recorded by the National Seismological Service (SSN) at exactly 16:47 local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 9 kilometers west of Ticul, precisely at latitude 20.39 degrees and longitude 89.61 degrees, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Although the geological phenomenon caused no reported damage due to its low intensity, it adds to a series of tremors that have been felt for several days in this area.
The last of these seismic events occurred just on December 11 and had a higher intensity of 4 degrees on the Richter scale, also at a depth of 5 kilometers, which prompted an investigation by authorities due to the unusual nature of the event.
Therefore, the State Coordination of Civil Protection of the State Government, together with the National Seismological Service, conducted a detailed investigation determining that there is an apparent geological fault in Ticul with a 100-kilometer-long escarpment, which makes these phenomena “normal.”
