The Yucatan has been selected as one of the five locations to host the National Olympics in 2025. The event will see the participation of 5,200 athletes across nine sports disciplines.
At a press conference held in Mexico City, Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena announced that the Yucatan, along with Tlaxcala, Jalisco, Puebla, and Colima, will host the games starting May 15. The event will include more than 30,000 children, young people, coaches, and judges competing in 51 different sports disciplines.
The Governor thanked the Federal Government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, for their support in strengthening sports as a tool for social transformation, human development, and national pride. He also emphasized Yucatan's commitment to the Federal Government's initiative to engage youth in sports as a way to deter drug use.
Governor Mena expressed his excitement and gratitude for the Yucatan's selection as a host for the 2025 National Olympics. The event will bring more than 5,000 athletes, coaches, judges, and delegations from across the country to the region. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with hosting such a significant event and viewed it as a great opportunity for the Yucatan.
The Governor assured that the Yucatan is preparing diligently to host the Open Water, Canoeing, Fencing, Karate, Rowing, Triathlon, Roller Skating, Sailing, and Softball competitions. He reiterated the government's commitment to invest in infrastructure, services, security, organization, and hospitality to ensure a memorable experience for each athlete and visitor.
Addressing the athletes of Yucatan, Governor Mena said, "This is your moment. This event is for you. We are going to work so that you can compete at home and showcase what Yucatecan talent is made of. You have the full backing of your government and a people who believe in you."
Rommel Pacheco Marrufo, the general director of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE), stated that the 2025 National Olympics will usher in a new era in the country's sports history, marked by unity, excellence, joy, and hope.
He praised the Yucatan Government's efforts to construct the Mayan Renaissance centers, which will promote sports in the region. He emphasized that these centers will provide children with their first exposure to sports. Marrufo also highlighted that the National Olympics are the country's largest and most important multi-sport event, hosting between 45,000 and 55,000 athletes from across the country in 51 disciplines. He concluded by saying that the event is where dreams begin and stories of effort, talent, resilience, and victory start to be written.
