A Michigan couple, Paul and Christy Akeo, both 60, have been detained in Cancún, Mexico, since March 4, 2025, following their arrest on charges of fraud related to a timeshare dispute with Palace Resorts. Their children are actively protesting the arrest, asserting its unjust nature and seeking assistance for their parents’ release.
Background of the Dispute
The Akeos’ legal troubles stem from a timeshare membership they entered into with Palace Resorts in 2021. Allegedly dissatisfied with the services provided, the couple disputed charges totaling approximately $117,000 through their credit card company, American Express, which sided with them and issued a refund. Palace Resorts contends that the Akeos fraudulently disputed legitimate charges and publicly encouraged others to do the same, actions that led to the filing of a criminal complaint in August 2023.
Upon their arrival in Cancún on March 4, the Akeos were arrested in a joint operation involving Interpol Mexico. A judge has ordered a six-month preventive detention period to allow for further investigation. During this time, Palace Resorts has been granted the opportunity to present additional evidence.
Family’s Response and Allegations
The couple’s children have voiced strong opposition to the detention, alleging that their parents are being held without the right to bail or adequate communication with family members. Their daughter, Lindsey Lemke Hull, claims that Palace Resorts is demanding $250,000, the signing of a nondisclosure agreement, and a public apology as conditions for their release. She further alleges that her parents are being denied medical attention and proper communication.
U.S. Congressman Tom Barrett has expressed concern over the situation, stating that his team is collaborating with the White House, State Department, and law enforcement partners to resolve the matter urgently.
Palace Resorts’ Position
Palace Resorts maintains that the Akeos breached their contract by promoting and profiting from their membership benefits on social media, actions explicitly prohibited under the terms of their agreement. The company asserts that after failed attempts to serve notice, legal proceedings were initiated, resulting in the couple’s arrest.
As the investigation continues, the Akeos remain in custody. Their family, legal representatives, and supporters are actively seeking a resolution, emphasizing concerns over the conditions of their detention and the nature of the charges. The case has garnered significant media attention, highlighting broader issues related to timeshare agreements and consumer rights in international contexts.
