Merida, Yucatan — Journalists and communicators in Yucatan marked the Day of Freedom of Expression on Sunday with a ceremony at the Monumento a la Patria, where they honored fallen colleagues and voiced concerns over the challenges facing the profession, including the rise of artificial intelligence and persistent violence.
The event, organized by the associations Mujeres Periodistas y Comunicadoras de Yucatan and Comunicadores 7 de Junio A.C., brought together independent communicators for a discussion on the state of journalism and the changes brought by the digital environment.
Unity Key to Navigating Technological Change
Yoisi Moguel Rosel and Addy Perez Echeverria, presidents of the two groups, delivered a joint message calling for greater solidarity among journalists. They agreed that technological transformation requires stronger cohesion within the sector to face the challenges of digitalization and evolving news platforms.
Artificial Intelligence: Opportunity and Challenge
A major topic of reflection was the advance of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on journalism. Participants noted that while AI tools can streamline processes and optimize tasks, they also risk replacing essential journalistic functions such as field investigation, fact-checking, and critical analysis. They warned that indiscriminate adoption of these technologies could deepen labor precarity in newsrooms.
Persistent Violence Denounced
Beyond the commemoration, the gathering became a platform to highlight the various forms of violence faced by journalists in Mexico. Attendees recalled that the country remains one of the most dangerous for news work, with threats extending beyond physical attacks to include psychological pressure, digital harassment, and smear campaigns aimed at undermining credibility and emotional stability.
Economic Hardship and Legal Pressure
Participants also flagged financial violence in the sector, reflected in low salaries, lack of benefits, and economic difficulties for local and independent media. They pointed to the increasing use of legal tactics, such as defamation lawsuits, to intimidate or discourage investigative reporting on matters of public interest.
Defending Press Freedom a Permanent Responsibility
The statement emphasized that defending freedom of expression begins with the journalistic community itself, which has a responsibility to protect this fundamental right for the benefit of society. Attendees agreed that ensuring an informed citizenry is essential for strengthening democratic participation and promoting free, critical public opinion.
The ceremony concluded with a floral offering and a prolonged applause in memory of journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty. With this symbolic act, communicators reaffirmed their commitment to journalistic principles, stressing the importance of adapting to new times without abandoning the pursuit of truth and public service.
