Woman Killed, Man Injured in Hit-and-Run on Punta Sam Highway

Police and paramedics at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run on the Punta Sam highway in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo.

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A woman died and a man was injured Monday morning on the Punta Sam highway in the Costa Mujeres area after a company personnel bus allegedly struck their motorcycle and fled, according to authorities.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m. on the road connecting Punta Sam to Cancún. Witnesses told police that the couple was heading home after the man picked up his wife from her job at a hotel in Punta Sam. Several company buses were reportedly speeding, and one rear-ended the motorcycle, throwing it into another vehicle and running over the occupants.

Officers from the Public Security Department, transit police from Isla Mujeres mainland, and paramedics responded to the 911 call. They found a motorcycle on the road, the woman dead, and the man injured. Paramedics treated the man at the scene.

Witnesses said they tried to follow the driver, but other buses from the same company allegedly blocked the road, allowing the driver to escape. No arrests have been made, but one motorist was taken in as a possible witness.

Investigators from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene for evidence to identify the driver involved.
