Woman Detained in Isla Mujeres for Recording Police Sparks Rights Debate

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A woman was detained by Isla Mujeres municipal police officers after she refused to stop videotaping their actions outside the police station, sparking criticism from human rights organizations who say documenting public officials is a protected right.

The woman had gone to the station to inquire about a missing person who had stopped answering calls and whose phone appeared to be offline. While waiting, she began recording the officers’ activities, which prompted them to detain her.

In a video circulated on social media, the woman can be heard protesting her arrest: “Ma’am, they’re going to break my phone. I’m not doing anything wrong. What’s wrong with you? Wait, let me turn off my phone. Why are you arresting me? I’m calm, I’m not doing anything wrong.”

The Quintana Roo State Human Rights Commission (Cdheqroo) has stated that documenting the work of public servants is neither an administrative infraction nor a crime, and is permitted under law.

The incident has fueled debate over police conduct and citizens’ rights to record law enforcement in public spaces.
