TULUM, MX — Violence once again erupted on the streets of this tourist destination on Monday night when a man was shot and killed at the corner of Géminis and Sagitario streets, in the very heart of Tulum.
According to witnesses, the gunshots caused scenes of panic among pedestrians, who threw themselves to the ground in a desperate attempt to protect themselves from the attack. Some managed to take shelter in nearby businesses, while others remained lying on the sidewalk, immobilized by fear.
Security personnel arrived minutes later to cordon off the area and attempt to gather information on the perpetrators, who managed to escape. The victim, whose identity had not been revealed by the close of this edition, was left lying on the pavement amid a heavy police presence.
This incident adds to the wave of violence that has intensified since Diego Castañón assumed the municipal presidency of Tulum, where armed attacks and other high-impact crimes have called into question the tranquility of locals and visitors.
