Cancún Sends 30 Brigades to Clear Flooded Streets

Municipal workers in Cancún clear drains and pump water from flooded streets during a rain response operation

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta ordered city crews to step up rain response efforts as steady downpours left standing water across Cancún, sending 30 brigades into the streets to clear drains and keep traffic moving.

Officials said the operation aims to prevent water from building up further and to protect residents’ safety. Forecasters expect rain to continue through the weekend.

“We have a forecast of rainfall throughout the weekend, so we are asking residents to take precautions and report any situation through ChatCun, at WhatsApp 998 778 4500, which is available 24 hours a day. This will let us act quickly to prevent risks,” Peralta said.

Moisés Estrella Buenfil, head of the city’s Public Services Department, urged residents to support the effort by keeping streets clean, avoiding littering in public spaces and respecting garbage collection schedules.

195 Workers, 25 Vehicles on the Streets

Estrella Buenfil said the mayor instructed the department to deploy 30 brigades staffed by 195 workers, backed by 25 vehicles and two pieces of specialized equipment: a Vactor vacuum truck and an auger.

During the day’s work, crews cleared about 92 drainage wells, cleaned 705 grates and storm drains, and serviced 23 stormwater collectors. They also worked on three storm drain outlets and addressed 71 spots where water had pooled, reopening 52 roads to vehicle traffic.

The brigades are continuing patrols and cleanup work on avenues including Nader, Yaxchilán, Xcaret, Cobá, Palenque, Bonampak, Andrés Quintana Roo, Leona Vicario, Lak’in, 135, Las Torres, Chac Mool and Niños Héroes, among others, with priority given to the hardest-hit areas.
