US Man Arrested in Cancun on Drug Charges, Linked to High-End Bike Thefts

Police officers detain a man in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A US citizen is under investigation for allegedly stealing high-end bicycles and electric scooters in Cancun’s hotel zone, after police caught him with marijuana near a currency exchange office.

Officers from the Public Security Department (SSC) of Quintana Roo spotted the suspect, identified as Michael “N,” acting suspiciously outside a currency exchange on Av. Coba, between Sierra Street and Bonampak Avenue, in the Supermanzana 3 neighborhood. He was handling small bags containing what appeared to be marijuana and was standing next to an electric scooter.

During a search, officers seized 27 bags of marijuana. The suspect was arrested and handed over to the State Prosecutor’s Office on drug possession charges.

However, initial investigations into his possible criminal activities revealed that he may also be linked to the theft of high-end bicycles and electric scooters, particularly in the access area of the hotel zone.

The arrest was carried out by members of the SSC’s Orion Group, a specialized anti-theft unit. Officers were conducting a patrol in coordination with the Mexican Army and the National Guard when they located the suspect next to the scooter in the currency exchange parking lot.

In addition to the drug possession, the suspect could not prove ownership of the electric vehicle. He remains in custody as the State Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation.
