Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Uruguay’s national football team has arrived in the Riviera Maya to set up its training base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, choosing the Mayakoba resort complex for its stay.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa paid an official visit to the team’s camp, where she met with Ignacio Alonso Labat, president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), and greeted players, coaching staff, and delegation officials.
Among the players she spoke with were José María Giménez (Atlético Madrid), Federico Valverde (Real Madrid captain), Ronald Araújo (Barcelona captain), and Sebastián Cáceres (Club América).
Lezama expressed her satisfaction that Quintana Roo was chosen as a base camp for one of the world’s most storied football teams, highlighting the region’s infrastructure, connectivity, and service quality for hosting world-class events and delegations.
She also toured the training facilities, which meet international technical specifications and were prepared to the standards required for a World Cup team.
The presence of Uruguay in the Riviera Maya has generated excitement among local and foreign fans, especially the Uruguayan community living in or visiting Quintana Roo, who have shown strong support for the team since its arrival.
Lezama was accompanied by state Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra and Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado.
