Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo — Uruguay’s national soccer team will arrive in the Mexican Caribbean on June 9 to set up its base camp ahead of the upcoming World Cup, according to Uruguayan media reports.
The squad, coached by Marcelo Bielsa, will be the only World Cup-qualified team to officially establish its training headquarters in Quintana Roo, putting the state in the international sporting spotlight for several weeks.
Uruguay will train at the Mayakoba Training Centre, a sports complex in the Riviera Maya that will serve as the team’s hub and a gathering point for fans, media, international visitors, and tourists drawn by the World Cup atmosphere.
The team’s presence is expected to generate significant international exposure for Quintana Roo, given Uruguay’s status as a historically competitive South American side.
Sports analysts predict the stay will boost hotel occupancy, tourist mobility, and media attention for the region.
Uruguay’s roster includes world-renowned players such as Federico Valverde, Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo, Rodrigo Bentancur, and José María Giménez, leading a generation considered among the strongest in international soccer today.
Uruguay will compete in Group H, facing Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde. The team’s World Cup debut is scheduled for June 15 in Miami against Saudi Arabia.
The decision to set up camp in Quintana Roo gained further attention after Portugal’s national team opted instead to base itself in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In the coming weeks, tourism, sports, and security authorities are expected to finalize preparations for the team’s arrival, including logistics and security operations to accommodate players and the anticipated influx of visitors.
