Former Municipal Police Officer Detained in Femicide of Alejandra Michelle in Chetumal

Chetumal, Quintana Roo, where the femicide case of Alejandra Michelle has been under investigation since 2020

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Nearly six years after a family lost their daughter in the waters off Chetumal, the case of Alejandra Michelle has returned to public attention with the reported detention of a former municipal police officer.

Miguel Ángel “N” was reportedly taken into custody over his alleged connection to the femicide of the 16-year-old, whose body was found in a mangrove area near Calderitas. Officials have not yet confirmed the detention publicly.

The case dates to June 21, 2020, when Alejandra went out for a run and never returned home. Hours later, her body was discovered among the mangroves along the highway leading to Calderitas.

Family Rejected Initial Drowning Finding

Authorities initially attributed the death to drowning, but the family disputed that account from the outset, citing signs of violence and circumstances that did not match an accidental death. Frustrated by the lack of answers, relatives conducted searches on their own, gathered possible evidence and demanded that the case be investigated with a gender-based perspective.

That pressure ultimately changed the course of the investigation, which was later reclassified as a femicide. The demand for justice has since become one of the most visible causes taken up by relatives and advocacy groups that have followed the case over the years.

According to the accounts that have circulated, investigators have identified possible links between the former officer and the teenager.

The detention remains unconfirmed, and Miguel Ángel “N” is presumed innocent unless and until a judge issues a verdict. Under Mexican law, it will fall to the State Prosecutor’s Office to present evidence and to the courts to weigh it.
