Cozumel, Quintana Roo — An Ultramar ferry struck a Xcaret Xailing vessel Monday morning as it maneuvered out of Cozumel’s Muelle Fiscal, marking the second collision between the two companies at the terminal in less than a month.
According to preliminary information, the Ultramar 1 was pulling away from berth 6 when it hit the Xelha, a Xcaret Xailing ferry docked at berth 5 that was taking on fuel at the time.
Collision Occurred During Departure Maneuver
The impact struck the stern on the port side of the Xelha. Officials have not yet said how much damage the ferry sustained or whether the dock facilities were affected.
Despite the collision, the Ultramar 1 continued its route a few minutes later. No injuries or suspension of operations at the terminal have been reported so far.
Port and maritime authorities will review the maneuvers carried out by both vessels, determine the circumstances that led to the collision and establish whether any damage requires further action.
The incident stands out because it is the second in under a month involving Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing vessels at the Muelle Fiscal in Cozumel, a terminal used daily for passenger transport between the island and Playa del Carmen.
