Two Arrested in Playa del Carmen After Victim Flags Down Police Over Extortion

Two suspects in handcuffs being led away by police officers in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police arrested two people on Tuesday after a woman flagged down officers and said she had just paid an extortion demand in the city’s downtown area.

Officers from the Public Security Department, working alongside federal forces, were patrolling on 10th Avenue between 8th and 10th North streets when a woman approached them for help. She told police she had just handed over money as part of a “derecho de piso” — a protection payment — and pointed to a man sitting in a parked vehicle a few meters away.

The woman said she recognized the man and a woman with him because they had previously come to her workplace to demand payments under the same scheme.

Police approached the vehicle and searched the occupants. Officers seized three cellphones, a manila envelope containing 2,800 pesos in various denominations, a bank card, and a white Chevrolet Aveo with Quintana Roo license plates as possible evidence.

The suspects, identified as José Ángel N. and Linda Yoana N., were taken into custody and turned over to the State Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine their legal status as the investigation continues.
