Dog Abandoned Outside Animal Shelter in Tulum Sparks Outrage Online

A dog tied to a fence outside the Alma Animal Tulum rescue facility

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A dog was abandoned tied up under the sun outside the Alma Animal Tulum rescue group’s facilities, sparking outrage on social media after shelter members publicly reported the incident.

According to the association, the individuals responsible had previously come to the shelter asking for the animal to be taken in. They were told the shelter was currently over capacity and maintaining strict health protocols to prevent risks among rescued dogs and cats.

Hours later, when the shelter manager returned from work, she found the dog tied up outside the facility, exposed to high temperatures, with no information about its health, vaccination, or deworming status.

The rescuer explained that immediately admitting the dog poses a risk to the other animals in care, as it is unknown whether it has any illness or medical condition. She added that recently installed security cameras captured images of the people involved, who reportedly said they were from the community of Cobá.

The incident drew widespread reactions on social media, with citizens condemning the abandonment and calling for greater responsibility toward pets. Meanwhile, Alma Animal Tulum asked the public for help with food, vaccines, veterinary care, and a temporary space for the dog, as well as any information that could help identify those who left it there.
