Tulum, Quintana Roo — Taxi drivers in Tulum have voiced support for recent enforcement operations by the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) targeting drivers who allegedly provide ride-share services through digital platforms without proper authorization.
According to taxi operators interviewed during the inspections, the authorities are verifying that all transport providers comply with legal documentation and requirements. They said such checks help maintain fair conditions for those who operate formally and pay for permits, insurance, and other obligations.
“They are not against the law; they are putting in order the documents of those who provide public services. We pay for service, insurance, and everything, and they are also devaluing our work,” said Óscar Ortiz, a Tulum taxi driver.
Ortiz said he knows that vehicles linked to digital platforms operate daily in the municipality, though he said he does not know their exact rates. He claimed that their fares are often lower than those of authorized providers, creating unfair competition for those working within the regulatory framework.
IMOVEQROO’s operations are part of ongoing supervision efforts across Quintana Roo to ensure compliance with current transport regulations. Authorities have not announced whether sanctions or additional measures will be taken against drivers caught providing service irregularly.
