Cancun, Quintana Roo — Residents and service providers in Tulum are organizing a protest for Sunday, May 3, to demand unrestricted access to beaches and a say in the management of the Parque del Jaguar.

The demonstration is scheduled to take place at the Glorieta de las Ruinas, coinciding with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s expected visit to Cancun for the inauguration of the Nichupté Bridge.

Organizers describe the movement as nonpartisan and peaceful, aiming to bring together citizens, residents, artisans, musicians, street vendors, business owners, athletes, and nearby communities including Akumal, Macario Gomez, Francisco Uh May, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

The central goal is to reclaim the right to free enjoyment of the beaches and to demand that community voices be heard in decisions about the future of Parque del Jaguar.

Beach access has been a contentious issue in recent years, particularly since the Mexican Army took over operation of the park, imposing restrictions on beach use.

As of now, no official response has been issued by the authorities responsible for managing Parque del Jaguar regarding the planned protest.

On April 23, during the 45th anniversary of the Tulum National Park, a brief protest was held at Parque del Jaguar against policies of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), beach restrictions, and the management of the public space.
