Cancún, Quintana Roo — Following the cancellation of Grupo Xcaret’s Sacred Crossing 2026, local canoe collectives have organized a community event called “Travesía con Corazón 360” (Crossing with Heart 360), scheduled for May 3 between Cancún and Isla Mujeres.
The initiative, promoted by Cancún-based canoeists who had planned to participate in the Sacred Crossing, was announced on social media with messages such as “When paddling is also an act of resistance.”
The event calls for a ceremonial departure at 4:30 a.m. from Playa Langosta, with a welcome ceremony scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Isla Mujeres. Organizers invite participants to wear white and bring offerings, in a day meant to support canoeists who have trained for nearly six months.
The gathering aims to strengthen identity, community, and traditional maritime practices. However, it remains unclear whether authorities will provide support, raising concerns about participant safety.
The call comes weeks after Grupo Xcaret suspended the Sacred Crossing 2026 following a legal setback involving the use of Maya cultural elements. The company said the decision was a precautionary measure amid potential social and legal tensions, while the case remains under review by the National Copyright Institute (Indautor).
