Protest for Beach Access Disrupts Tulum-Playa del Carmen Highway

A collective of tourists and tour operators staged a protest on Federal Highway 307 in Tulum. They are advocating for the reopening of the "old road" to the beaches, a decrease in admission fees to Jaguar Park, and the demilitarization of the beaches. The protestors contend that locals find it challenging to access Tulum's beaches as they must traverse through a hotel to get to the sandy areas. The protest resulted in significant traffic congestion at the city's entrance, affecting both tourism workers and travelers.

The closure of the road generated intense vehicular traffic at the entrance to the city, which generated discontent on the part of workers in the tourism sector and travelers to Playa del Carmen and Tulum Airport.

Some of the tourists affected by this blockade were unable to reach Tulum International Airport and missed their flights.

After almost half an hour, following dialogue with authorities from the Municipal Police and the National Guard (GN), the protesters cleared the road, but continued their protest on the sides.

Meanwhile, a special security device is maintained in the area due to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s tour.
