Toddler Beaten Into Critical Condition in Cancun; Stepfather at Large

A 2-year-old boy with visible bruises on his face, lying in a hospital bed in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after a brutal beating that his family says was carried out by his stepfather, who remains at large.

Relatives of the child’s mother posted images on social media Monday showing the toddler with severe bruising on his face and body. They identified the alleged attacker only as Diego, the mother’s partner, who they say fled before authorities arrived.

According to preliminary reports, the mother brought the boy to Cancun General Hospital for treatment after the assault. Family members said she had distanced herself from them after starting a relationship with Diego and moving in with him. Following the attack, she reached out to relatives for help transporting the child to the hospital.

Hospital social workers reported the case to authorities, and the State Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation. Officials have not released further details but confirmed they are searching for the suspect.

The child’s condition remains guarded, and he is under medical observation. More information is expected in the coming hours.
