Cancún, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver was targeted in an armed attack that ended with his vehicle engulfed in flames after crashing into a water utility property in Cancún on Sunday night.
The incident began on Comalcalco Avenue, where armed individuals intercepted the driver of taxi number 2236. In an attempt to escape, the driver sped away, eventually losing control on Nichupté Avenue and crashing into property belonging to the company Aguakan.
The assailants took advantage of the crash to open fire on the driver before fleeing the scene. The impact caused the vehicle to immediately catch fire, creating panic among witnesses and area residents who alerted emergency services via 911.
Local police officers and firefighters responded to extinguish the flames and conduct rescue operations for the taxi driver. Authorities have not yet released details about the driver’s condition or identity.
The area remained under police guard as officials collected evidence and searched for the perpetrators, who managed to escape. No arrests have been reported.
