Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Small hotels in Playa del Carmen closed out the summer vacation season with occupancy running below expectations, reaching just 45 to 48 percent, said Offner Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa del Carmen.
In an interview, Arjona said the outlook for the coming months remains difficult, with advance reservations for September and October currently at 18 to 20 percent.
He attributed the weak tourism performance to multiple factors and called for stronger coordinated strategies among all three levels of government and the business sector.
With Mexico’s September patriotic holidays approaching, hoteliers are hoping for last-minute bookings. Arjona said any recovery, however, is expected to be marginal under current conditions.
He added that small hotel owners will continue working with other business associations and chambers, as well as municipal and state authorities, to strengthen tourism promotion and create better conditions for occupancy recovery.
