Sheinbaum and Lezama Deliver 474 Property Titles to Colosio Families After 30-Year Wait

President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Mara Lezama present property deeds to residents at an event in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — After more than three decades of uncertainty, 474 families in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood received their property titles from President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Mara Lezama on Friday, in what officials described as a long-overdue act of social justice.

Speaking at the Poliforum event, Sheinbaum said the titles provide legal certainty and allow families to pass their homes to future generations. “Today you know that the house you worked so hard to build is yours, and you can leave it to your children with peace of mind,” she said.

Governor Lezama called the delivery a fulfillment of a historic debt to the neighborhood’s first residents, who built their homes by hand as Playa del Carmen grew into a tourist destination but lacked legal documents to protect their property. “Today 474 families can say with the force of the law and the emotion of the heart: this house is mine,” she said.

Sheinbaum noted that the regularization is part of a national goal to provide legal certainty to one million families, and praised coordination between the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU), the National Institute of Sustainable Land (INSUS), and the state government. She said the process began under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and will continue under her administration as part of the Housing for Welfare program.

Lezama explained that in addition to an 8 million peso federal subsidy to facilitate regularization, the state government covered all registration fees at the Public Property Registry so that no beneficiary had to pay. She also acknowledged Sheinbaum’s personal push for the process, noting that 24 additional titles were added just hours before the event thanks to joint work with INSUS.

Edna Elena Vega Rangel, head of SEDATU, reported that in addition to the 474 deeds delivered Friday, 30 more legal certainty documents were granted, bringing the total to 2,397 titles handed over in the Colosio neighborhood as part of the regularization process.
