Quintana Roo Reports Six Maternal Deaths in 2026, Surpassing Last Year’s Total

Quintana Roo — The state has recorded six maternal deaths so far in 2026, surpassing the three deaths reported for all of 2025, according to the latest weekly report from the federal Health Department.

The report, published July 20, places Quintana Roo 14th nationally in number of maternal deaths. The state’s maternal mortality ratio stands at 24 deaths per 100,000 estimated births, above the preliminary national rate of 21.8 per 100,000 live births.

All reported deaths occurred in medical facilities, highlighting concerns about the health system’s ability to respond to obstetric emergencies. In contrast, neighboring Yucatán has reported four maternal deaths this year, while Campeche has recorded none.

Nationally, 247 maternal deaths have been reported in 2026, down from 276 during the same period in 2025. Despite the decline, experts emphasize that each death is potentially preventable with timely care and proper monitoring during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

The highest maternal mortality ratio is among women aged 50 to 54, with 1,238 deaths per 100,000 live births, though most absolute cases occur in women of reproductive age.

Leading causes include obstetric complications: hemorrhage during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum (16.2%), abortion (15%), hypertensive disorders such as preeclampsia and eclampsia (14.6%), and other pregnancy-related complications (9.3%).

Quintana Roo is among the states with a maternal mortality ratio above the national average, along with Yucatán, Mexico City, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Michoacán, and Chiapas.
