Cozumel Trains 200 Mototaxi Drivers as Crashes Rise

Mototaxi drivers in Cozumel gather for a two-day road safety course taught by municipal traffic officers

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Public Security and Traffic Department has trained 200 mototaxi drivers after a rise in traffic crashes involving the purple-and-white canopy vehicles, officials said.

Traffic officers from the department’s traffic subdivision taught the two-day course, which focused on preventing crashes and reinforcing responsible driving.

The training covered obeying traffic regulations, handling blind spots, making correct turns and crossings at intersections, and the dangers of using distractions while driving.

Officers also briefed the drivers on the administrative, criminal and civil penalties they can face for driving under the influence of alcohol or causing a crash.

Municipal authorities said the aim is to cut the number of crashes tied to the mototaxi service and to respond to residents’ calls for safer roads on the island.
