In Cancún, Quintana Roo, the maritime industry has been suffering daily losses of around $300,000 since last Saturday. This is due to the closure of several ports in the state because of adverse weather conditions, according to Ricardo Muleiro López, the director of the Nautical Association of Quintana Roo. He explained that the state's port activities were initially suspended last Saturday due to a "southerly wind". However, recent heavy rainfall has led to another suspension of maritime activities.
López admitted that the outlook for the coming days is bleak. Forecasts predict continued heavy rain and strong winds across Quintana Roo for several more days. As a result, he estimates that there could be up to 55 days of port closures this year, predominantly due to weather conditions.
Before the most recent closure due to heavy rainfall, López assured that the maritime industry was operating at 60 percent of its capacity.
Just prior to the Nautical Association of Quintana Roo's announcement, the Quintana Roo Integral Port Administration (Apiqroo) declared the closure of ports for all vessels under 15 meters in length. They also cancelled all recreational maritime activities in the region due to the heavy rain.
Governor Mara Lezama announced on her Facebook account that only passenger ferries and ro-ro cargo services would continue operating on their Playa del Carmen-Cozumel and Cancún-Isla Mujeres routes. The agency also urged residents to stay updated on weather conditions from official sources.
