Mérida, Mexico — In an effort to reinforce prevention and response protocols for both foreign and local tourists ahead of the upcoming hurricane and rainy season, the director general of Quintana Roo’s State Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC), Guillermo Núñez Leal, met with the U.S. Consul General in Mérida, Justen A. Thomas. Representatives from municipal civil protection agencies across the state also attended the meeting.

Enhanced Diplomatic Collaboration

The discussions took place at the U.S. Consulate General in Mérida, focusing on improving diplomatic coordination between Quintana Roo and the United States to streamline communication and emergency response during hydrometeorological events. The goal is to mitigate risks for residents and U.S. tourists visiting the state’s popular destinations.

All 11 municipalities in Quintana Roo sent civil protection representatives to ensure comprehensive coordination. Key topics included knowledge-sharing, training programs, and the identification of cyclone shelters for tourists.

Guillermo Núñez emphasized the state’s commitment to safety, stating, “We will work tirelessly with national and foreign authorities to safeguard the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their origin, in line with Governor Mara Lezama’s New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, which prioritizes prevention and security.”

Consul General Justen A. Thomas acknowledged Governor Lezama’s efforts during past hurricane seasons, which resulted in zero casualties.
