Puerto Morelos Boosts Aquaculture for Local Economy

Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Puerto Morelos is intensifying efforts to promote aquaculture in 2026 with the aim of diversifying the local economy and strengthening food security.

Municipal President Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz announced that actions to boost aquaculture will be intensified during 2026 to strengthen one of the most promising productive activities in the municipality and generate well-being for Puerto Morelos families.

The mayor explained that in 2025, aquaculture production reached approximately 40 tons, primarily of gray and red tilapia, an achievement that has become a pillar of family economy and productive development in the municipality. Currently, most of this production is destined for the local market and neighboring municipalities.

To expand this activity, the Puerto Morelos City Council is already managing support with state and federal authorities with the objective of implementing new programs, delivering incentives, and expanding technical assistance to producers. These measures seek not only to increase productive capacity but also to strengthen food security, offer direct and indirect employment sources, and reduce dependence on external products.

Among the planned actions is coordination with agencies such as the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development to provide courses, such as the Financing for Agricultural Producers, Fishermen, and Aquaculturists course, which will provide tools to access capital and consolidate sector projects.

Blanca Merari emphasized that aquaculture not only contributes to providing quality protein for families but also represents a strategic option to diversify and strengthen the municipality’s economy. Currently, 11 independent producers and two registered in the National Registry of Fishing and Aquaculture (RNPA) participate in this activity, an indispensable requirement for those formally integrated into the sector.

With these actions, the municipal government reaffirms its commitment to promoting productive activities that boost the local economy and generate development opportunities for Puerto Morelos communities.
