Mayor’s Green Legacy for Puerto Morelos’ Future

Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has declared that her administration is committed to defending the local ecosystem, which she described as the only inheritance to be left for future generations.

“Puerto Morelos is a Green municipality, blessed by nature, where we work with specialists and civil society to keep beaches clean of trash and plastics, and we will not lower our guard to defend the only legacy we will leave to our daughters and sons: a sustainable ecosystem,” stated Mayor Tziu Muñoz.

According to the Mayor, under Axis 4, the Green Agenda, of the Municipal Development Plan, being a green municipality also means considering mobility and urban development with order, respect for the law, and executing useful public works that are visible to all and transform people's lives.

After recalling that her administration created the Secretariat of the Environment, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Mobility, she stated that her government works based on a Green Agenda that is friendly to the environment and always ensures the preservation of attractions such as the emblematic Ruta de los Cenotes, mangroves, and the fauna that inhabits the municipal territory.

As part of the work carried out under the Green Agenda, she mentioned the rehabilitation of the six beach access points, an important project for the tourism sector with an investment of 13 million 600 thousand pesos, and the rehabilitation of the Fisherman's Wharf, with 6 million 700 thousand pesos.

“Carrying out that project required many hours of effort and push to obtain the corresponding federal permits, a phase in which we had the support of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa,” she explained.

She asserted that the new Fisherman's Wharf was a strategic commitment to society that had to be fulfilled and is now a Promise Kept.

On another matter, she said that in coordination with the State Government and the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), work is being done to contain and clean the sargassum that washes up on the beaches of Puerto Morelos year after year. This task involves teams of municipal collaborators, personnel from Semar, sailors, and volunteers.

In fact, she recalled that the Secretariat of the Navy installed 2,100 meters of anti-sargassum netting in shallow waters to minimize the impact of the macroalgae on public beaches.

Furthermore, the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), with more and better machinery and the necessary human capital, has collected 5,073 tons of the macroalgae this year, which were transported to confinement sites.

Finally, she indicated that her government works for the care of the planet, as it is the only way to guarantee well-being for the following generations.
