Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Puerto Morelos has begun maintenance on 22 absorption wells in the community of Leona Vicario, investing 700,000 pesos (about $38,000 USD) to restore their full infiltration capacity and reduce flood risk during the rainy season.
The work involves mechanical desilting of the wells, some reaching depths of up to 32 meters, to remove sediment and reconnect them with the water table. Crews are also manually and mechanically cleaning sand traps, extracting accumulated sludge and debris.
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz said the project is a priority to protect families’ property, ensure safe mobility on streets, and reduce public health risks.
Public Works Secretary Mario Salinas Castro said the investment covers the rehabilitation of 22 wells distributed across different points in the locality.
Municipal authorities launched the effort alongside the Social Participation Committee, which verified the start of operations.
Public Services Secretary Leonel Salazar Trejo urged residents to keep streets clean to prevent trash from blocking the absorption wells.
