Cancún, Quintana Roo — A large contingent of municipal and state police, along with army and navy personnel, converged on Cancun’s Region 251 on Saturday afternoon after reports of gunfire on Isla Guadalupe Street in the Paseos del Mar neighborhood.
A woman at the scene told authorities she received a call from a relative who said police had shot him and that he was about to be arrested. Neighbors reported seeing officers take the young man away but were unsure whether he was brought to a hospital or held in custody.
Unofficial accounts suggest the incident began during a preventive stop, when the young man allegedly became aggressive and fought with officers, after which gunshots were heard. Authorities have not confirmed that account.
The city’s security coordination center said no gunshot wound victim had been admitted to local hospitals. It also did not specify which police agency the officers involved belonged to. An investigation is ongoing.
