Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa Spice will return this fall with six weeks of special menus, dining promotions and culinary experiences intended to encourage residents and visitors to explore the city’s restaurant scene.
The 2026 campaign will run from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15, according to CANIRAC Playa del Carmen, the local chapter of Mexico’s restaurant-industry association.
CANIRAC President Roberto Lepe Gutiérrez formally opened the call for restaurants to participate during a recent press conference. The initiative is being organized with support from the Playa del Carmen Tourism Secretariat.
Unlike a traditional food festival held at a single venue, Playa Spice will take place inside participating restaurants across the city. Each business will create its own promotion, special menu or dining experience, allowing customers to choose among Mexican, Caribbean and international cuisines.
A final list of participating restaurants, menus, prices and reservation requirements has not yet been released. The current announcement is primarily an invitation for local businesses to join the campaign.
A longer season for 2026
The new edition represents a significant expansion from the 2025 campaign, which ran throughout September.
Last year, the municipal government reported that 100 restaurants participated, offering discounts and promotions ranging from 10% to 30%. Diners could browse the offers through a digital catalog published on the city’s Let’s Playa tourism platform. The municipality described Playa Spice as a joint effort to support local restaurant activity.
CANIRAC has not said whether the same discount structure will apply this year. Restaurants participating in the 2026 edition are expected to develop offers suited to their menus and target customers.
Running from the beginning of October through mid-November gives this year’s campaign approximately six and a half weeks to attract diners. It also places the promotion during a period when many restaurants are looking to generate more local business before the winter tourism season begins.
More than discounts
Organizers are presenting Playa Spice as more than a coupon campaign. Restaurants are being encouraged to develop experiences that give diners a reason to try unfamiliar establishments or return to places they already enjoy.
Depending on the restaurant, that could include a special menu, a limited-time dish, a package for two, reduced prices or another promotion created specifically for the campaign. Exact formats will become clearer when the participant catalog is published.
The initiative also gives independent restaurants an opportunity to appear alongside larger hospitality businesses under a shared marketing campaign. That visibility can be especially valuable in Playa del Carmen, where restaurants compete not only with one another but also with the dining programs offered inside all-inclusive resorts.
For visitors, the campaign may provide an introduction to restaurants beyond Quinta Avenida and the beachfront tourist district. For residents, it offers an incentive to support local establishments and explore different parts of the city’s increasingly varied dining scene.
Food as part of Playa’s tourism identity
Playa del Carmen has developed a restaurant market that reflects both its Caribbean location and its international population. Traditional Mexican cooking and seafood restaurants operate alongside establishments serving cuisines from Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East.
The Tourism Secretariat and CANIRAC say Playa Spice is intended to strengthen that diversity and position gastronomy as a larger part of the destination’s identity.
That goal also reflects a wider shift in travel habits. Food has become an important part of how visitors select and experience destinations, while restaurants increasingly serve as meeting places where tourists and residents share the same spaces.
The strength of this year’s campaign will ultimately depend on how many restaurants participate and the value and originality of the offers they create. Diners will also need clear information about prices, restrictions, reservation policies and whether promotions are available every day or only at selected times.
Those details, along with the complete restaurant lineup, are expected to be announced as CANIRAC completes the enrollment process ahead of the Oct. 1 launch.
