Playa Experts Trains 70 University Students to Guide Tourists in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A Playa del Carmen program that trains university students to assist visitors has reached 70 percent of its initial goal, with about 70 young people taking part so far, officials said.

José Gabriel Pérez Álvarez, director of the municipal Youth Institute, said the Playa Experts program aims to prepare 100 university students to advise tourists on the destination and help connect them with services they may need during their stay.

Training Aims to Open Job Opportunities

Participants receive training in visitor services and destination knowledge. Pérez Álvarez said the experience is also intended to help them enter the labor market later or develop projects of their own.

As part of the preparation, students learn about tourist sites and experiences not only in Playa del Carmen but also in nearby destinations such as Tulum and Cancún. The goal is for them to have enough information to guide visitors looking for activities during their time in the Riviera Maya.

The program also serves as an option for completing the community service requirement at universities. Some students decided to keep collaborating after finishing that academic requirement, which allows the program to retain participants who already have experience, according to the director.

With roughly 30 spots still available, the initiative continues to work toward its initial target of 100 trained university students.
