Playa del Carmen Street Vendors Allege Police Abuse in Unequal Enforcement

A street vendor in Playa del Carmen interacts with authorities during an enforcement operation

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Social media videos showing authorities confiscating goods from street vendors have sparked controversy in this tourist hub, with residents alleging unequal enforcement of municipal regulations.

Complaints circulating online accuse municipal officials of arbitrary operations against artisans and informal vendors. According to the allegations, while some service providers can continue working by paying for permits — even for activities like offering shade — other merchants face removal from public spaces, detention, and confiscation of their merchandise.

The shared images show police officers and inspectors conducting operations in tourist areas, drawing criticism for the apparent unequal treatment of informal workers who depend on these activities for their livelihood.

One case that has generated particular outrage involves a female vendor who allegedly had her goods confiscated. The incident was captured on video and widely shared, prompting comments condemning the authorities’ actions.

Social media users have questioned police conduct, arguing that these operations affect people seeking honest income while demanding greater sensitivity and equity in law enforcement.

This incident adds to an ongoing context of conflicts between informal commerce and regulation in tourist destinations, where enforcement operations frequently generate social controversy. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
