Playa del Carmen Set to Host Pro Padel League International Stop

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen is ready to welcome a new stop on the Pro Padel League (PPL) circuit, an international competition that will bring 10 teams to the city’s Poliforum from Sept. 24 to 27.

Speaking on behalf of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, Alberto López, director of the Municipal Sports Institute, said at a press conference at the venue that hosting the event again is an honor for the local government, and he reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to promoting sport and cementing the destination’s reputation as a host of national and international events.

“It is a great honor to bring them here and welcome them,” López said, noting that competitions of this caliber let Playa del Carmen show the world not only its ability to organize major events but also its culture, hospitality and sporting tradition.

He said the mayor has ordered a coordinated security and logistics operation for the four days of competition so that players, teams, visitors and fans can fully enjoy their stay.

One of the tournament’s biggest draws will be Mexico Waves, the team representing Playa del Carmen and the reigning champion, which will try to defend its crown in front of its home crowd.

The Mexican side opens play Thursday against Athletics of New York, a match that also offers a chance at redemption after the two teams previously met in the third-place playoff.

Leonel Fernández, CEO of Mexico Waves, stressed the importance of playing at home again and urged fans in Playa del Carmen and in cities such as Cancún, Cozumel, Tulum and Mérida to come to the Poliforum to back the Mexican team.

The opening match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, starting at 4 p.m., with access for fans who want to support the Mexican champion at the start of this new stage of the Pro Padel League.
