Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities have removed nearly 800 abandoned vehicles from public streets in Playa del Carmen over the past four months as part of an ongoing urban improvement and safety operation.
The initiative, dubbed “Operation Image,” targets vehicles left on streets and in neighborhoods across the municipality. Mayor Estefanía Mercado explained that the effort addresses more than just aesthetics, aiming to prevent potential risks to residents.
“Abandoned vehicles can become spaces for illicit activities or hide improper objects, and they affect tranquility in residential areas,” Mercado said. The procedure involves notifying owners, giving them 24 hours to remove the vehicle, and towing it if they fail to comply.
Over 1,400 Vehicles Notified in First Quarter
According to data from the Citizen Security Department, authorities notified owners of 1,413 vehicles between January and March. Of those, 761 were removed by their owners, 267 were seized under protocol, and 385 remain under verification.
In the first week of April, officials issued 49 additional notifications, with 22 vehicles subsequently removed by department personnel.
Residents Support the Cleanup
During a recent operation in the Cataluña II subdivision, authorities surveyed local residents. Most expressed support for the program, stating the abandoned vehicles represented safety hazards and negatively impacted the urban landscape.
The municipal government has encouraged citizens to report abandoned vehicles via WhatsApp at 984-407-8079 to expedite responses. These actions form part of a broader strategy to reclaim public spaces, improve mobility, and enhance neighborhood security in Playa del Carmen.
