Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The city of Playa del Carmen is preparing for protest actions against the homicide of Carlos Manzo, the mayor who was killed in Uruapan, Michoacán, as echoes of discontent have reached this part of the country.
Luis Herrera Quiam, Secretary General of the Playa del Carmen City Council, reported that they are aware of the situation and hope to soon provide a response to the citizens' request.
"The information we have is through social networks; obviously we are giving precise follow-up to this call for a demonstration. Our task is to monitor the event," said Herrera Quiam.
Although the event did not occur in this state, protests have also been visible here among citizen groups. According to national media agencies, Carlos Manzo ran as an independent candidate for the Municipal Presidency of Uruapan in the 2024 elections and was the winner. Before being mayor, Manzo was a Morena party deputy from 2021 to 2024. From 2017 to 2018, he was an auditor for the Mexican Social Security Institute in Michoacán.
"There is respect for freedom of expression, it must be said, Playa del Carmen is a place where that freedom has been given to citizens," said Luis Herrera Quiam.
There have been strong movements in Playa del Carmen, such as feminist protests that have at times led to intense moments involving public monuments. However, up to now, the municipal police have only dedicated themselves to observing what happens within the realm of respecting the free expression of ideas, without carrying out detentions or any other act of harassment by the authorities.
"With accompaniment and being very attentive to them, listening to them when there is a request, generating those work tables, those dialogue tables, and that is how we have managed to ensure that these demonstrations do not get out of control," added the city council representative.
It is expected that in the coming days the call for dissenters will be released with more details for the gathering, the same as is happening in other parts of the country.
