Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen will construct and renovate nine soccer fields as part of a national social project aimed at strengthening community ties through sports ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado Ascencio signed agreements for the program alongside Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa at a ceremony in the state capital’s Government Palace. Mercado Ascencio said the project will create spaces for community development, particularly for children and youth.

“This investment in sports infrastructure contributes not only to physical well-being but also to building safer and more inclusive communities,” she stated.

The agreement is part of a strategy led by the Mexican government through the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU) and the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), coordinated with state and municipal authorities in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

Federal Investment for Sports Facilities Across Quintana Roo

The project includes over 63 million pesos in federal funding to upgrade 46 sports facilities across all 11 municipalities in Quintana Roo, benefiting more than 240,000 people through construction and renovation of soccer fields and multi-purpose courts.

Mercado Ascencio emphasized that this effort will help reclaim public spaces and promote community interaction while providing positive alternatives to keep youth away from risky behaviors.

Sports as a Tool for Social Inclusion

The mayor added that her administration will work closely with state and federal governments to ensure these projects have a real impact on residents’ quality of life.

The signing ceremony brought together municipal authorities from across the state, consolidating a joint effort to promote sports as a tool for social inclusion, well-being, and community development.
