Playa del Carmen Fights Bee Threat to Save Crops & Honey

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen municipal government has initiated the 2025 Zoosanitary Campaign Against Varroasis in Bees, aiming to safeguard hive health, preserve biodiversity, and ensure productivity in the local beekeeping sector. The effort is part of broader environmental and agricultural protection measures.

Coordinated Efforts to Combat Varroa Destructor

The campaign, led by the Municipal Directorate of Agricultural and Fisheries Development in collaboration with the Quintana Roo State Committee for Livestock Promotion and Protection, includes technical inspections across various beekeeping production units in the municipality. These inspections involve sampling and sanitary checks to detect the presence of Varroa destructor, a parasitic mite that threatens bee populations, honey production, and crop pollination.

Alejandro López, Director of Agricultural and Fisheries Development, explained that the nationwide mandatory campaign employs approved acaricides and biological control methods, such as the use of drone combs. "These measures are designed to minimize the impact of this disease on local apiaries," López stated.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals

López emphasized the campaign’s alignment with Playa del Carmen’s broader vision of sustainable development and social justice. "These actions are intended to ensure the well-being of rural communities and our producers," he said.

The municipal government is implementing public policies to strengthen the primary sector, recognizing its strategic role in the region’s evolving economic model. Officials aim to shift from an "All Inclusive" tourism approach to a "Todos Incluidos" (All Included) framework, where growth extends beyond tourism to include agriculture, fishing, and beekeeping.
