Playa del Carmen Parking Meter Concession Under Review

The newly appointed administration in Playa del Carmen has announced plans to reassess the concession of parking meters in the city. This decision follows ongoing controversy surrounding the provision of this service. The previous administration had aimed to reform the application of parking meters, but this objective was not met.

Javier Santo, a councilor of the Mobility Commission, revealed that the issue will be addressed in working groups. "In terms of parking meters, we need to reevaluate their current state in our working groups. The concession has been somewhat opaque, and we lack full access to the information on how the resources are managed," Santo explained. He emphasized the need for careful study in these working groups, particularly as transparency in resource management is a key principle of the new administration.

During the final extraordinary council session of the previous Solidaridad town hall, a proposal to amend Traffic Regulations to prevent the placement of immobilizers on cars with unpaid parking meter fees was rejected. This issue was left unresolved and will now be addressed by the new administration.

It's worth noting that the parking meter concession was initially approved during the 2016-2018 administration led by Cristina Torres Gómez. This allowed for the installation, commissioning, and operation of an integrated mobility system by the legal entity "Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano S.A de C.V." for a period of up to 15 years.
