Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Nichupté vehicular bridge, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Cancún’s recent history, will open on Sunday, May 3, with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in attendance.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced the opening during her weekly program La Voz del Pueblo, calling the bridge a fulfilled promise and a decisive step to transform mobility in the top tourist destination of the Mexican Caribbean. She invited the public to take part in the historic moment and said an online registration system has been set up for those wishing to attend the inauguration.

A strategic project for Cancún

The Nichupté Bridge stretches 11.2 kilometers, of which 8.8 kilometers are elevated roadway crossing the Nichupté lagoon system. It includes interchanges connecting the urban area with the Hotel Zone.

The roadway features one lane in each direction, a reversible lane, a bike lane, and a pedestrian walkway.

The project provides a direct link between the Kabah highway interchange and Kilometer 13 of the Hotel Zone, near Plaza Kukulkán, reducing travel times and offering a new alternative during traffic jams or emergencies.

Investment exceeds 12 billion pesos

Construction began in August 2022 and is now in the final stages of signage and testing.

Originally budgeted at just over 5.5 billion pesos, the total cost exceeded 12 billion pesos due to technical adjustments, timeline extensions, and budget updates.

Federal and state authorities have reported that environmental compensation measures are being implemented, including wetland restoration, reforestation, and expansion of conservation areas in the Nichupté Mangroves.

The opening of the Nichupté Bridge marks a milestone for Cancún, becoming a strategic new route for residents, workers, and tourists, and solidifying its place as one of the most emblematic works in southeastern Mexico.
