Cancun, Quintana Roo — Fishermen in Puerto Juarez will soon have a new pier, according to Josue Armando Gonzalez Vazquez, coordinator of delegations in Benito Juarez. The project is currently in the analysis phase, aiming to provide a boarding point for those who currently lack one.
In an interview Wednesday, Gonzalez said the proposal had been on the table for years but was revived by the current administration after a recent conflict among fishermen over inadequate infrastructure. “They had a problem about two months ago. We’ve already worked on the issue with them, and we’re establishing a location for a pier for those who don’t have one,” he said.
Two possible sites are being considered: one in the area known as Las Piedras and another near the Playa del Niño port. Authorities are evaluating both options.
Before finalizing the project, officials are compiling an updated registry of fishermen to determine the pier’s capacity and prevent future disputes. Gonzalez emphasized that priority will be given to those who reside in Puerto Juarez.
In parallel, the official said they have addressed issues with public transportation, noting disorganization among van-type units, which led to measures to improve their operation. Traffic measures have also been implemented due to vehicle congestion on main streets, where illegal parking was affecting traffic flow. “We spoke with traffic authorities to ensure efficiency and speed when a car parks there… cars have already been towed because they were blocking prohibited areas,” he said.
Regarding the pier, Gonzalez said the project is in the cost estimation stage. Once the budget is defined, it could be presented to the relevant authorities within one to two months.
