Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Romina Solorio Espinoza was elected as the child mayor of Puerto Morelos during the 2026 Children’s Council election, an initiative aimed at fostering civic engagement and democratic values among young residents.

The election, held under the theme “Small Voices, Big Decisions,” took place at the Municipal Palace meeting room. Twelve girls participated in the democratic process, casting votes after presenting their proposals and aspirations for various council positions.

José de Jesús Espinosa Payán, the municipal secretary general, represented Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz at the event. He emphasized the importance of the exercise in strengthening democratic values and encouraging active participation from an early age.

“This is an opportunity for girls to express their ideas and understand the importance of responsibility and commitment to their community,” Espinosa Payán said.

The 2026 Children’s Council includes girls serving as mayor, trustee, and councilors, representing their peers in this civic exercise. The electoral process was supported by staff from the National Electoral Institute (INE), municipal officials, and parents, who served as observers and organizers.

Municipal authorities reiterated their commitment to promoting spaces for children’s participation, aiming to foster informed and engaged citizens for Puerto Morelos’ development.
