Cuernavaca, Morelos — The Morelos state government is in the final stages of securing an agreement with a company to launch air taxi passenger services from Mariano Matamoros Airport, officials announced.

Víctor Sánchez Trujillo, the state’s Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, said negotiations are advanced but declined to name the company involved. He clarified that it is not a traditional commercial airline, marking a different operational model for the state. “We are creating the conditions to close a very important contract,” he stated.

The project initially plans to open a Mérida-Cancún route, a strategic link that could strengthen tourism and business connectivity in southeastern Mexico. Sánchez Trujillo hinted at broader ambitions, noting the company may expand its network of destinations as operations develop.

He explained that viable service requires specific infrastructure, particularly hangars to house aircraft. The secretary revealed that the state has begun talks with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR), which currently occupies some airport spaces. One hangar under FGR custody in Morelos has been inactive for months, prompting the state to request its release for adaptation to the company’s needs.

Beyond the contract, the project aims to diversify the state’s economy and reactivate Mariano Matamoros Airport, which has faced development limitations for years. Introducing air taxi flights could open new avenues for agile, specialized air mobility.
