Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — More than 2,000 people took part in the “Run 2026: Race for Social Justice” charity event on Sunday, July 12, benefiting the city’s Animal Control, Assistance and Zoonosis Center (CENCAAZ).

The race began at 6 a.m. on Avenida 10 in front of the Mario Villanueva Madrid Sports Complex, drawing state and municipal officials, families, and residents committed to the cause.

Participants contributed food, cleaning supplies, and other items for animals housed at CENCAAZ. The agency set up a collection point that received a strong response from attendees.

The starting flag was waved by Alberto López, director of the Municipal Sports Institute, representing the city council; Jorge Martín Álvarez, representing Governor Mara Lezama; and state deputy Jorge Sanén, among other officials.

Runners could choose 3-kilometer or 5-kilometer routes, plus a recreational walk open to all ages. Participants were also allowed to bring their pets. The course ran along Avenida 10, continued to Avenida CTM, followed Fifth Avenue to the Portal Maya, and returned via Avenida 10 to the finish line.

Kandy Mendoza, secretary of Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the value of citizen participation. “When we unite for a common purpose, things like this happen: citizen participation and collaboration in favor of causes that strengthen social justice,” she said.

The successful event underscored the commitment of institutions and society to animal welfare, healthy lifestyles, and building a more supportive community in Playa del Carmen.
